Devlog 6: Boss fight, UI map, Credits, dropping items, health bar, PSX shader, and new health item


Hello Everyone! I have a lot of new features to share since my last update, so lets get right into it.

PSX Shader

I have used a great shader that makes my game look like it is running off an actual PlayStation 1. This will give all you PlayStation 1 fans nostalgia and be a throwback to those old games. I am aiming for the game to be reminiscent of the old Resident Evil games. The shader gives everything a wobble effect when the camera moves. Check out the examples below.

UI Map

I have created some UI that shows the layout of the entire mansion. It shows all rooms and doors. Each room on the map will turn green when you have discovered it. Each door will turn red on the map if you discover that it is locked. Every room and door that has not been discovered will remain clear. This will allow you to not get too lost within the mansion, and will help you know which rooms you have not yet visited. I decided to show all of the locked doors to give a clue to which doors you may be able to unlock with your collected keys. The room that you are currently in will flash green so you know exactly where you are. Each door is tied to each room on the map so when the player goes through it, it will detect which room was entered.


Dropping Items

I have added a simple feature where you can drop items out of your inventory. The dropped item will be left on the floor for you to come back for later. This is useful for if your inventory is full, letting you choose what you will carry with you. When making this feature I ran into an issue where picking up ammo that you have dropped would result in the amount of ammo to change. For example if you drop 15 ammo, you would have the chance to pick it again but only get 11 ammo instead of all 15. I fixed this by saving the amount of ammo before you drop it.


Credits

I have added a credits scene which will play at the end of the game. This can also be accessed from the main menu. It credits everyone who made all the third party assets for this game. All credits can be clicked on to take you to where I got the assets from. The video of the credits is shown below.

Health Bar

I have added a health bar which shows how much health you currently have. it changes color depending on how much health you have. It goes from green, to orange, to yellow, to red, to clear as you lose health.


New Health Item

I have created a new health item. This item gives 4 health points instead of 2 like the previous one. This item can only be obtained by combing a green health box with a red health box. It may be useful to hold back on using the green health to save up for the new yellow health box.


Boss Fight

The final room in the game contains a boss enemy. This enemy is the most difficult one to fight in the game. This boss is completely immune to all bullets. Its only weakness is explosives. The boss will follow you forever around the room. The trick to beat the boss is to shoot the explosive barrels in the room as it walks past them, but be careful because you can also take damage from them. I do not want to spoil the whole fight, so the video below shows a few seconds of it.
